Dinner Party #1: Pastitsio and Black Out Cake
So I recently had a dinner party with my friends. It's my very first one at this apartment. I was very excited since I love to entertain. So I started off the night with some things to snack on. I didn't want to make an official appetizer since the main course was going to be filling. So I bought some cured olives, and a crunchy loaf of bread. With that, I offered some olive oil and some salt.
And here are the different olives. From top left going clockwise: feta stuffed, next black cured kalamata, marinated and mixed, and blue cheese stuffed. Don't forget the pit bowl.
For sides, I roasted from asparagus. They're in season now and looked great. Just some salt, pepper, and oil.
I also roasted some portabellos. Again, simple with salt, pepper, and oil. Into an oven at 400 degrees for about 15 minutes or so.
The mushrooms were tender and super flavorful. I like it when they taste like what they should. I added a squeeze of lemon juice for extra flavor and freshness.
And the asparagus. Sometimes I serve this with a sprinkling of parmesan cheese but these were delicious on their own.
And for the main, I made pastitsio. A good make ahead of time time dish. Recipe to follow in a different post.
And here is a complete dish. I hope my friends like it! Some took seconds so I think that's a good sign.
And to finish things off, a 4 layer black out cake. Actually, I was aiming for 2 layers but miscalculated the ingredients. So it came out to 4 layers. Whatever, it was gigantic and delicious. Oh, by the way, be careful of tall cakes. They tip over the cake stand easily, as I found out many times that night. Oy! Recipe to come in a different post.
